What will you do if you forget to replace the must-replace oil-filter after you've filled up the crankcase with all the most expensive oil that you can afford?

1. Drain the oil and start everything again
2. Drain the oil in a clean pan, and re-use the oil
3. Remove the filter and put the new one on as fast as possible, so you don't loose too much oil that'll spill..
4. Remove the filter, and don't care whether oil will spill all over the ground
5. Too tired to do everything again.  Just ride the way it is!
6. Swear and cry out loud, then bring it to the dealer!

Fun Factor - Engine Oil Change
« on: September 02, 2011, 07:55:45 PM »
It is fun to test your reaction after you have done something that's not what most people do.
Emphasis:  To make it more clear, the oil filter is supposed to change at 5000 miles, and this one has 15000 miles on it.  YOU SHOULD HAVE A NEW FILTER ASAP! ;D
Don't feel bad that you pick a wrong answer, because this is just a fun factor! :)
It will be more fun, if you can tell everyone why you think which option is the best choice, of course, you don't have to share.
BTW. no one will know which option you have selected.  It is a secret! :)

If you don't have a patience to find out the correct option, click here to view the answer and explanation (required register to view)!

I voted to ride it just the way it is...if you are changing the oil when you are supposed to, a missed filter change I wouldn't think anything of it.Since this poll is for newer touring models...mmm...might be a catch here:-)
The more you know..the less you don't know.

Good point! :)
So, I have updated the topic to apply to all models, and also an emphasis! is added.
You may change your mind now. ;D

Well consulted with a few friends and we all agree this is the way to go about it.Don put it best so I just did a copy and paste.
If it was one oil change, and it was at long before recomended intervals the way I do things, I would not hesitate to keep the old filter till next change. In this case, they say it is 5,000 miles recomended, and 15,000 since last filter change so the person went three oil swaps without changing filter already. In that case, provided you have not run the engien yet, I would clean the oil catch pan good and clean, drain the oil, but use a different pan for pulling the filter. Change filter, put "clean" oil back in, through a filter funnel perhaps. But not reuse what came from filter. If you ran the engine and therefore the clean oil through the dirty filter (which is probably about plugged after 15,000 miles), then scrap it all.
The more you know..the less you don't know.

Com'on guys and gals!
Give us your choices.  It will be a fun and useful factor when it's revealed.
But without any vote, then what is the point.  :)

Com'on Gary!
I know that you try to get out of it, but let say you have forgotten to clean the oil-filter for the last 15000 miles, and this is time you need and plan to take it out for cleaning; but again, you realize that you've already filled up the crankcase with all the expensive oil. ;D
Select a choice for fun! :)

who in the heck would go 15000 before changing oil, I change every 3000. Oil is the life of the engine no place to skimp.

I follow the manual, and change the oil every 5k.
I am not surprised for some reason, one has to skip the oil filter, and ride the bike until 15k.
I had to skip the oil filter, while I was on a long trip, and that was almost 10k trip.
I guess just for fun. Pick your option, Gary! :)

You mean you changed the oil but didn't get a new filter at the same time? If your gonna take the time to drain oil, then its just as easy to put on a new filter or in my case clean the filter while the oil is draining.

I choose to start over. If you do take care of your bike ie service, keeping the bike clean, it will last a very long time and still look good. Service and generally keeping the bike clean IMO not only makes the bike last longer it also keeps the bike looking like a new bike 10 or even 20 years down the road. I, myself, are very meticulous with all service and I do my own detail that includes S100 foam cleaner,S100 engine brightner, and I like to use meguires ultimate polish on the paint and their nxt wax.

Excellent advice!
But, you make me feel bad that I have not taken care of my bike as what I suppose to do. :)

You live in a part of the country that you can go longer between details so that ain't nothing to sweat. Service was the main topic and that is the most important thing to keep these things running at peak performance for a very on time.
