Late Breakfast at Clewishton Inn
I hope I remember all the names (from left to right): Jerry, Bert, Steve, Murph, and Gabe.
This is my first attendance, so they were "trying" to ignore me. :)

Heatshield Wrapped Exhaust

  • Last year, I almost get kill due to the failure of rear brake switch.  I know that the material is not good, the design is poor and heat is one of the factors that contribute to the failure.  I have  the new recall switch now, but the HD didn't solve the heat issue, so this one of my projects to solve the heat issue.

    HEATSHIELD WRAPPED EXHAUST

    Benefit:
    • The engine will run cooler, so there is less power loss due to heat.
    • Block heat that may damage the rear brake light switch.
    Parts
    • 3 rolls - Lava wrap (part # 372005 size: 2" x 15' 1200F continuous) from heatshieldproducts.com. I ordered these heatshields from Amazon.
    • High temperature cable ties (stainless steel)
Below is a few pics of the exhaust after I finished the project, which took me about half an hour.

Both (1) and (2) are the starting point of two different roll of heatshield.

The meeting point (yellow arrow) of two rolls of heatshield.

Do not wrap this area (red arrow), and end the heatshield at these points (1) and (2) (see below photo)

I have learned that I shouldn't wrap the heatshield to close to the exhaust ends, as I had a hard time to align the flange to the bolts.  I had to pull the heatshield back about one (1) inch to be able to install the exhaust, and push the heathshield back to cover the open part.

I have to wait for the RTV at the muffler joints to dry, before I can fire up the bike tomorrow.
    Wish me luck!

  • Thanks for asking Gary!
So far, the only thing I can tell for sure is the noticeable decrease of heat around the right side.
As you may know that I have just installed a new cam (TW6-6), and I am still waiting for the Dyno, so I don't have much time to do some temperature measurement at the rear brake switch yet.
No matter what, there should be some increase in horse power as the engine should run cooler, due to the heatshield has blocked the heat from heating up the engine block.
I am preparing everything for the long trip in the high heat in June, and btw. I am going to Chicago again. :)

Well us Southern Illinoisians won't hold that against ya, I mean you do ride the best bike. You have safe travels in June, we're hoping to get to do a lot of riding and camping in this year. The Motocampers 3rd annual chill out is june 8,9 and 10 at Hunts in Tellico Plains, tn. http://www.motocampers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4630
We plan on being there missed last year, we only got to go to one campout and that was with the IBMC in april down the Land Between the Lakes in ky. Rained a bunch and they ended up closing the campground due to rising waters, still had a blast though. Only other camping last year was in october here at home at the Hamilton County Fish and Wildlife area, did that to check out our new camper. Can't wait for camping season to start to get back to camping if health holds. Last year had to have one knee replaced and had heart problems, hopefully nothing comes up this year.

  • I wish I can take the vacation earlier,, so I can go to this camping event, but it is not a choice.
I will put this event in my calendar next year.

  • I have to say that i am very happy with my works.
After a 30 miles ride, I feel almost no heat on either side.
It is worth to have the heatshield wrap!
